Sapphire Character Reference .:OC:.

I started redesigning my old character designs that I am more align with, starting with my super go lucky mermaid Sapphire. She came to me while in middle school, but now I feel much happier with her design. She even has a backstory now~~

The mermaids in the world grow up at various levels of depth in the water, and once they start puberty they start growing gemstones on them(first on the forehead). The gemstones that a mermaid can grow depend on multiple aspects, including water depth, genes, and access to magical gemflowers that grow throughout the waters. The rarer your gemstone, the easier it is to climb in the community, and other clans can attempt to make offers in order to trade for a powerful mermaid whether through partnership, mages, or soldiers. These gems on the body are to be held in high value to oneself, and are crafted into gifts of jewelry, armor, artifacts, or weapons for people they care about.

Sapphire grows... well sapphires on her body. While that gemstone grants her a higher than average social status, her quirky nature and fixation on shells and finding a mate has left suitors typically wary of her. She spends her time exploring, collecting shells, and sings to them songs about finding someone who understands her and will cherish her for her whole self.
